Creativity Drives This Wedding Photographer
In October, 2006, my wife suggested I rent a film SLR camera to photograph three weddings in three weeks as a guest. Upon developing film from these three weddings, I decided that I wanted to start my own photography business. In January 2007, I founded Kevin Lush Photography based in Dayton, Ohio. Having zero experience as a wedding photographer, I listed my services for free on Craigslist.
Shortly after the initial listing, I was contacted by Julie B. who eventually hired me to photograph her wedding on June 30, 2007. I prepared for the wedding by purchasing the basic digital equipment needed for a wedding which included a Nikon SB-600, Nikon d80 camera and a kit lens. I rented studio lights for this June wedding which was in north east Indiana.
June 30th came quickly, and my wife and I made our way to the small farm town two hours from home. We walked into this hodgepodge of buildings forming the church. The walls were white and the carpet was bright red. As we walked in, I thought to myself "why am I doing this?" I placed my studio lights in the sanctuary and went to the bridal prep area. I walked into the room and snapped a beautiful shot of the bride sitting on the floor looking at herself in the mirror. At that very moment, I was overcome with confidence and all doubt was gone. Not a single time at any of my 143 weddings have I ever been nervous or doubted myself.
Nearly 10 years later and after more than 500,000 photographs taken, I still love photographing weddings in and around Dayton, Ohio. For the last couple of years, I have also branched out by taking on a few commercial photography clients in Dayton, Ohio. Additionally, I have had the opportunity to photograph local landmarks such as the Victoria Theatre in downtown Dayton, Ohio. Concert photography, completely unpaid, is also one of my photography passions. I have photographed more than 20 concerts so far.
Photographing Dayton weddings in 2017 is set to be great. I will be photographing weddings at several great wedding venues including the Dayton Art Institute. I still have a few 2017 dates open and plenty of 2018 dates open.
